Target Groups
Fianarana is aimed at motivated, needy young adults from educationally disadvantaged families who have completed high school in Fihaonana and wish to study.
Direct Target Group
Fianarana is currently supporting 18 university students and 12 Matura students during the project round 2022-25. For reasons of efficiency, no more Matura students will be considered. With the project round 2024-28, 35 participants have been added.
Strictly speaking, the four beneficiaries, Finaritra, Heriniaina, Ninà and Murielle, have a secondary school diploma, not a Matura. They completed their secondary education in July 2024, but due to the limited permeability of the Madagascan education system, they cannot attend further schooling. We will continue to support all four of them by preparing them for their professional lives through internships and training courses.
Successes and Setbacks
1
beneficiary has obtained a qualified job within six months of graduating with a bachelor's degree.
- This number is so low because Fianarana started in 2022 and the Bachelor's degrees will not be completed until 2025.
- Beneficiary: Tsiorintsoa, employed as an English teacher from March 2024, gross monthly salary MGA 450'000 or CHF 100

6
students from the (technical) high school dropped out due to bad behaviour and lack of diligence.
As part of the interim evaluation in June 2023, we decided not to support any additional high school graduates.
2
female students have dropped out due to pregnancy, although one of them will be supported a second time in the project round 2024-28.
We have made the (female) beneficiaries aware of the consequences of pregnancy and require them to take a pregnancy test at the beginning of the preparatory year and before the start of their studies.
Direct Target Group Accepts Project
A total of 77 young adults have applied for the project round 2024-28. That is more than twice as many as the maximum number that Fianarana can support in one round. The acceptance of the project among the direct target group is therefore very high.
Support Criteria
To receive support from Fianarana, young adults must meet the following criteria and pass our entrance exam and interview.
High School Diploma
Applicants must have completed their Matura at one of the two general high schools in Fihaonana:
- Lycée d'enseignement général Fihaonana
- Lycée Privé Catholique Saint Joseph Fihaonana
Legal Residence
It is irrelevant whether the people in question have their legal residence in or outside of Fihaonana. This is because very often the nearest high school is unimaginably far away. It would therefore be unfair to exclude young adults who have no choice but to go to school in Fihaonana.
Family Situation
The applicants' families are so severely affected by poverty that, as a rule, no family member has ever (!) completed an education or course of study. In addition, the families are prepared to make the personal contribution we have set.
Motivation and Grades
Applicants must have good grades in their school education. Those who do not have good grades but are particularly motivated can still be considered.
Career Goal
The career goal can be chosen freely, taking into account the results of the career counselling. If the chosen goal does not require a degree, does not enable a life above the poverty line, is unrealistic or disproportionate, these persons can only be supported if they pursue a different career.
Marital Status
Traditionally or legally married people are excluded from the project, as marriage can distract from studies. Consequently, only single or divorced people can be considered.
Age
Age in itself is not relevant. It is much more important that applicants have the necessary maturity.
Gender
Childless women and men have equal rights. If a woman has already become a mother and has sole custody, she can only be supported if her family is caring for the child.
Indirect Target Group
In addition to the education beneficiaries themselves, their parents, siblings and, above all, their own offspring benefit from the project. The beneficiaries' families are therefore the indirect target group.
